Testicular Layers

Tunica Vaginalis

This is a serous membrane derived from the peritoneum. It has two sub-layers:

  • Parietal Layer: Lines the inner scrotal wall.
  • Visceral Layer: Closely adheres to the testis, epididymis, and lower part of the spermatic cord.
  • Note: There is a small amount of lubricating fluid between these layers to allow the testis to move freely.

Tunica Albuginea

This is a dense, white fibrous capsule located immediately deep to the tunica vaginalis.

  • Function: It is the “skeleton” of the testis. It penetrates the organ to form septa, which divide the testis into approximately 250 compartments called testicular lobules.

Tunica Vasculosa

The innermost layer, consisting of a network of blood vessels supported by delicate connective tissue. It lines the inner surface of the tunica albuginea and the septa.
