The layers surrounding the ovary are structured to protect the delicate oocytes and facilitate the periodic release of an egg during ovulation. Unlike the testes, which have several complex layers derived from the abdominal wall, the ovarian coverings are more streamlined.
1. Germinal Epithelium
This is the outermost layer of the ovary.
- Structure: Despite its name, it does not produce “germ cells” (oocytes). It is actually a layer of simple cuboidal epithelium.
- Function: It is continuous with the mesothelium of the peritoneum and provides a protective outer sheath.
2. Tunica Albuginea
Located immediately beneath the germinal epithelium.
- Structure: A thin, but tough, capsule of dense irregular connective tissue.
- Function: Similar to the testes, it provides structural integrity and defines the boundary of the ovarian tissue. However, it is much thinner in the ovary than in the testis to allow for the rupture of follicles during ovulation.
3. Ovarian Cortex (Outer Region)
While not technically a “shell,” the cortex acts as the functional layer surrounding the inner core.
- Contents: It contains the ovarian follicles in various stages of development (primordial, primary, secondary, and Graafian) embedded in a connective tissue called the stroma.
- Stroma: The cortical stroma contains fibroblast-like cells that can transform into theca cells as follicles grow.
4. Ovarian Medulla (Inner Core)
The medulla is the central part of the ovary surrounded by the cortex.
- Contents: It consists of loose connective tissue, large blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves.
- Function: It provides the necessary nourishment and drainage for the developing follicles in the cortex.
5. Supporting Ligaments (External Attachments)
While these aren’t “layers” of the organ itself, these structures surround and suspend the ovary in the pelvic cavity:
- Mesovarium: A fold of the broad ligament that attaches the ovary to the posterior surface.
- Ovarian Ligament: Anchors the ovary medially to the uterus.
- Suspensory Ligament: Anchors the ovary laterally to the pelvic wall and carries the ovarian artery and vein.
