The Müllerian duct (Paramesonephric duct) is a paired embryological structure that gives rise to female reproductive organs such as the cervix, the upper one-third of the vagina, the fallopian tubes, and the uterus.The Wolffian duct (Mesonephric duct) is a paired embryological structure that gives rise to male reproductive organs such as seminal vesicles, epididymis, and vas deferens.
In females, the absence of Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) leads to the development of female genitalia from the Müllerian duct.
In males, the presence of Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH), secreted by foetal Sertoli cells, leads to the regression of Müllerian ducts, which would have otherwise developed into female genitalia. The presence of testosterone drives the development of the vas deferens and epididymis from the Wolffian duct.
